TONY DOLAN explains why CRONOS can’t stop VENOM INC. to use the name “VENOM”

In a new interview with the “HRH Metal featuring Dan Chan” Pin up, VENOM INC. bassist/singer Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan he was asked if he and his bandmates got a legal denial from VENOM bassist/singer Conrad “Chronos” Lant about the fact that they use the “VENOM” name. He replied (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “The only [time] we have had [an issue] been [when] we were to go to South America, and the [promoter] set up the ‘Black Metal’ [artwork]the infamous [VENOM album] cover, so he would set up the ‘Black Metal’ thing and using the VENOM [logo] from there, then they had a ‘INC.‘ there somewhere and you couldn’t see it. And then I f [Dunn, original VENOM and current VENOM INC. guitarist] received a letter from the legal department of [VENOM‘s record label] spinal truss behalf Konrad, simply saying “case and disclaimer” to do so. So I f just replied and went, ‘Okay. Show me any document, any agreement anywhere that says this belongs to anyone anywhere. And we never heard another word. Because it’s not, of course. And I sent them a letter as well just to say that we don’t have, don’t use related images [with the Cronos-fronted VENOM]. We’re not trying to convince everyone that we’re that band. We stand apart from it – like being part of it, but we stand away from it if at all. And if a promoter in another country decides to use what he wants for a poster, you have to talk to him; you don’t talk to us. So for us it was easy.”

Dunn said in a 2015 interview with The voice of metal that he didn’t know how Chronos felt about VENOM INC.his existence. “The fans know who he is, the fans know who we are,” he explained at the time. “I don’t want to get into all this political stuff, but every band that has a leader that’s iconic, [the fans] look at the leader as “this is the group”. Not true. [Cronos] was the last person to join VENOM – at my invitation. I met him at a girlfriend’s friend’s house. And we needed a rhythm guitarist – that’s what we needed. We didn’t need a singer; we had a singer. We needed a rhythm guitarist because our rhythm guitarist had left. Basically, we were, what? Two guitars, bass, drums and vocals – so we were five musicians at the start. So the rhythm guitarist left. I met this guy. I had never met him before. He said he was a guitarist; he had long hair; he was into metal; he worked at Pulse Studios belonging to David Woodfounder of] Careful files. I had gone there and I came out with my tail between my legs, because at that time, me and the other guys that I had in the band, we couldn’t afford to do a demo. So it was, like, ‘Hmm, this could be an incursion.’ So he was invited to a rehearsal, he came in as the rhythm guitarist, and the bassist left, like bands do. By default, he picked up the bass, then I wrote “Live Like an Angel (Die Like a Devil)”. And the idea for this song was… I said to him, ‘Can you sing?’ And he was, like, ‘I’m going to try.’ So the idea was that Clive Archerour original singer, was going to leave the stage and do a costume change and come back for ‘shizo’. Many of these songs were written before he joined the band. And that’s what people don’t realize.”

Regarding how Chronos came to use the VENOM name without either Dunn or original VENOM drummer Anthony “Abaddon” Braywho was also in an early incarnation of VENOM INC., I f said: “In 2005, my mother was seriously ill and I lost her…I lost my mother at the end of that year. I had already left. These things continued, and I was, like, ‘That’s it.’ And [Cronos] Call me. It was something to do with a license that came back for an album, which we were then going to move on to Sanctuary Records. And I was just, like, ‘My mind isn’t on it. It must be about the family. And I don’t care. I really don’t care what happens with this fucking album. Put it wherever you want. And it is during this conversation [that] he said, ‘Are you okay for me to continue VENOM?’ [And I said], ‘Yeah.’ Is this a decision I regret? Yes. Because in hindsight, if my head had been good, if my head had been screwed at the time, I would have said, “I think we should just bury it now.” “

Braywho was also part of The voice of metal interview, said that lant never asked her permission to use VENOM Name. “The name of the group, originally, was created by the two of us,” he explained. “So if he had legal status, he asked a person, [and] you have to ask the other person. Because I would have said no. And that’s why he didn’t ask me, because I would have said, ‘No, I don’t agree with that.'”

Bray went on to say that Chronos had no legal action possible by wanting to arrest VENOM INC. to use the VENOM Name. “The only thing he has, if we have a legal argument about it, is recent longevity,” he explained. “He has [a period of several years] where he put [stuff out and playing shows]so people know it’s VENOM. And that’s fair enough; we don’t dispute that. None of us dispute that. But we say we got what we got and everybody knows what it is and everybody understands that.”

Dunn, Bray and Dolan released three albums as VENOM between 1989 and 1992 — “The Primal Evil” (1989),“Ice Temples” (1991) and “Wastelands” (1992).

The classic range of VENOMlant, Dunn and Bray – is often credited with starting the entire black metal movement, but is more accurately considered an early example of extreme metal.

VENOM1982 second album “Black Metal”had a major influence on the early Norwegian black metal scene.

the Chronos– frontal version of VENOM continues to tour and make albums under the VENOM nickname. Join Chronos in this group are Rage (a.k.a Stuart Dixon) on the guitar and Dante (a.k.a Danny Needham) to the battery.

VENOM INC. will release their second album, “There is only black”September 23 via Nuclear Explosion Records. The LP marks the VENOM INC. drummer’s first recording Jeremiah Klingwho joined the group in 2018.

In 2018, VENOM INC. recruited kling to be completed for Bray on a European tour while Abaddon stayed home to spend time with her newborn daughter. VENOM INC. has since toured several times with kling without making official announcements on Braypossible return to the group.
