Pearl Jam enlists fan to play drums after Matt Cameron catches Covid

Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron had to sit out the band’s set on Thursday in Oakland, Calif., after testing positive for Covid-19, but the show went on anyway with the help of a fan , and pinch hitters Josh Klinghoffer and Richard Stuverud, as Blabbermouth reports. It was the first time he had missed one of their shows in 24 years.

“Matt Cameron is a true artist and a force of nature. However, even his superhero status couldn’t stop him from testing positive, and yes, that fucking COVID thing yesterday,” frontman Eddie Vedder told the crowd. He added: “Postponing was not an option and for us neither was cancelling. So we didn’t want to pull the plug and we couldn’t pull the plug. We have our band here, we have the equipment here and , more importantly, you are here.

Touring member Klinghoffer played drums for their cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which opened the set and played during “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town,” Why Go” and “Corduroy”. Longtime Jeff Ament collaborator Stuverud picked up the kit for “Quick Escape” and “Superblood Wolfmoon.” They also invited a fan named Josh Arroyo to sit on drums during the show’s “Yellow Ledbetter” finale.

Earlier in the month, the band paid tribute to the late Taylor Hawkins with a performance of “Cold Day in the Sun” by the Foo Fighters, with a healthy Cameron leading the way. He and Hawkins collaborated on their side project Nighttime Boogie Association.

Pearl Jam is on tour to support gigatonafter a two-year postponement due to the pandemic.
