Late shot in Game 6 Boston Celtics-Milwaukee Bucks sends crowded Deer Neighborhood fans fleeing to the streets

MILWAUKEE — Three people were shot near Deer District outside the Fiserv Forum late in Friday night’s Game 6 between the Bucks and Celtics, sending fans into the streets.

The Milwaukee Fire Department said a man and woman who were shot were taken to hospital Friday night, while a third person was driving there. All three have non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say a 29-year-old man is in custody.

“The incident occurred outside of the Deer District area,” Bucks communications director Barry Baum said in a statement to ESPN. “We direct all questions to the Milwaukee Police Department.”

Hours later, a second shooting less than a mile from the Fiserv Forum left 17 non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Ten people were taken into custody and nine firearms were recovered during the shooting.

Milwaukee police did not say if the two shootings were related. Investigations into both shootings are ongoing.

Bucks fans began crowding into Deer District during the team’s run for the NBA championship last season. With a chance to clinch the Eastern Conference Semifinals series against the Celtics and on a hot day after a long winter, Friday was the first chance for fans to pick up the slack. The team had installed metal detectors surrounding the bars and the entrance to the stage outside the arena.

The shooting took place outside this perimeter, about a block from the Fiserv Forum.

The Bucks announced before the game that Deer District had reached the capacity of 11,000 set for the watch party before Game 6.

Witnesses outside the arena said they heard gunfire with just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter of Boston’s 108-95 victory, which left many spectators in awe a frenzy, running in several different directions.

A large police presence remained outside the arena hours after the match, with police recording several nearby intersections.
